Psychosocial stress

Definition of psychosocial stress

In accordance with international standard DIN EN ISO 10075-1 Psychological stress is defined as the “totality of all detectable influences that come upon people from outside and have a psychological effect on them.” These influences trigger reactions in thinking, feeling and perception. In this regard, there is a technical difference between strain (the external stimulus) and the Claim (the individual reaction of humans). While stress can have a neutral or even activating effect, critical forms without sufficient resources lead to negative consequences of stress, fatigue or health problems.

Economic relevance and risk control:

In the modern world of work, psychosocial stress is a central variable of value creation. Studies from leading institutes (including McKinsey Health Institute and OECD) show that only Productivity losses due to uncontrolled risks approx. 3% to 6% of the total payroll bind. Inadequately designed working conditions lead to average missing costs 9,000€ per year and employee. The area of leadership is particularly critical: The unplanned loss of a key person at management level causes economic burdens between €100,000 and €300,000. Systematic control of psychosocial stress is therefore not a “feel-good factor”, but an economic necessity to ensure capital efficiency.

Areas of risk and effects:

Die Psychosocial risk assessment (GBU Psyche) categorizes these influences into four main areas:

  • Work task: e.g. emotional dissonance, high complexity or incomplete activities.
  • Work organization: For example, high work intensity, time pressure and frequent interruptions and disruptions.
  • Social relationships: e.g. lack of support, social conflicts or destructive leadership behavior.
  • Work environment: e.g. noise, poor lighting or poor human-machine interfaces.

If negative stress persists over a longer period of time, the risks of depression, burnout, cardiovascular diseases and musculoskeletal problems increase significantly.
