Workplace health promotion

Definition: Occupational Health Promotion (BGF) comprises all measures taken by companies to maintain and improve the health of their employees. This involves promoting physical, mental and social health in the work environment. The aim of BGF is to secure and strengthen the working capacity of employees, reduce stress, prevent illnesses and improve the quality of life in the workplace.

Objectives: The main goal of workplace health promotion is to create a healthy and productive working environment. This is achieved by promoting health-conscious behavior, improving working conditions and helping employees cope with stress and other psychological burdens. Other specific objectives of the BGF include:

  • Reduction of absenteeism: By preventing illnesses and improving health at work, absenteeism due to illness should be minimized.
  • Increasing employee satisfaction: Healthy employees are generally happier and more motivated, which has a positive effect on productivity.
  • Promoting work-life balance: BGF measures help employees to better reconcile work and private life.
  • Long-term competitiveness: Healthy and satisfied employees contribute to a company's long-term competitiveness.

measures: The BGF comprises a variety of measures that start at different levels:

  • Individual measures: These include health courses such as back training, nutritional counseling, stress management workshops or smoking cessation programs.
  • Workplace-related measures: These aim to make working conditions more health-promoting. Examples include ergonomic workplace design, the adjustment of working hours to individual needs or the introduction of flexible working models.
  • Behavioral preventive measures: Promoting a healthy lifestyle through information campaigns, regular health check-ups and sports activities.
  • Social measures: Creating a positive social climate in the company, which is promoted through supportive leadership, team development measures and an open communication culture.

Benefits for companies: The implementation of occupational health promotion has numerous advantages:

  • Reducing healthcare costs: By preventing disease and promoting health, costs associated with sick days and medical treatment can be reduced.
  • Increasing productivity: Healthy and motivated employees are more productive and therefore contribute directly to the company's success.
  • Attractiveness as an employer: Companies that pay attention to the health of their employees are more attractive as employers and can attract and retain skilled workers more easily.
  • Positive working environment: Health-promoting measures strengthen the working environment and promote team cohesion.

challenges: Despite the numerous advantages, companies also face challenges when implementing the GFA:

  • Acceptance of measures: Not all employees are enthusiastic about health-promoting offers right from the start. Targeted communication and often persuasion are required to achieve broad acceptance.
  • Individual needs: The needs of employees vary. Measures must therefore be designed to be flexible and adaptable.
  • Long-term approach: The success of BGF measures is often only apparent in the long term. It requires patience and continuous commitment to achieve sustainable improvements.

Legislative framework: Occupational health promotion is legally enshrined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (ArbSchG). Employers are required to protect and promote the health of their employees. There are also tax incentives for companies that offer BGF measures. Health-promoting measures can be tax-free for employees up to a certain amount.

Future trends: In the future, the importance of workplace health promotion will continue to increase. In view of demographic change and increasing psychological stress in the working environment, BGF is becoming increasingly important. Companies that invest in the health of their employees will be more competitive in the long term and benefit from a better working environment.

The integration of digital technologies and personalized health services will continue to shape BGF in the coming years and open up new opportunities to sustainably promote health at work.
